Manni research activity

Insects genetics and genomics
My research activity during the Master’s Degree focused on chemical-based communication in insects, specifically on the Mediterranean frui fly Ceratitis capitata (medfly), in order to improve the monitoring of control techniques of this serious pest. I identified and characterised genes involved in pheromone perception and analyzed their expression profile in relation to different physiological conditions of the insect. In the future, heterologous recombinant protein expression will allow us to discover specific protein-ligand interactions, giving us the first summary of pheromone perception in the Medfly, thus furnishing possible useful tools for applications in the field. This project encompassed a broad range of techniques, including molecular biology, genomics, biochemistry and bioinformatics.
I also contribute to studies on Aedes albopictus (tiger mosquito) and Glossina morsitans (tsetse fly).
