Research project

GENETICS AND EPIGENETICS IN NEUROINFLAMMATION

This project will consider the role of oxidative stress involved in neurodegeneration and in the development of brain damage in multiple sclerosis. It will study the joint effects of protein Hsp70 (that is controlled by genes localised on the MHC class III region, on chromosome 6) and vitamin D (receptor encoded by a gene on chromosome 12) on the risk of developing the disease; risk defined by the interaction of genetic, environmental and epigenetic factors.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a multifactorial, disimmune disease, that affects the central nervous system and is characterised by an inflammatory process that leads to myelin damage. The pathogenesis of this disease is complex and involves different interconnected mechanisms. Furthermore different microRNAs, whose expression is altered in neurodegenerative disease, will be considered; the effects due to the action of pharmacological substances on patients, able to modify the expression levels of microRNAs, will be studied.
