Research Project

Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is a DNA repair system that removes a variety of DNA lesions, including ultraviolet-induced damages, through the removal of the oligonucleotide containing the lesion. Transcription-coupled NER (TC-NER) efficiently removes lesions from the transcribed strands of active genes. Various hereditary diseases involve defects in NER, including Cockayne Syndrome (CS), a rare autosomal recessive disorder due to mutations in CS genes.
CS patients exhibit diverse clinical symptoms such as growth failure, neurological dysfunctions, mental retardation, photosensitivity of the skin and hypersensitivity to UV light.
The research activity is focused on the identification of new CSA protein interactants involved in oxidative damage removal and in the molecular mechanisms which may be responsible for neurodegenration in CS patients. Therefore, the interaction between CSA and other proteins implicated in neurodegenerative diseases will be analyzed, with a particular focus on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease.
