Research Project

Development of a germplasm bank of orchids of Ecuador

Orchids are a very interesting group of plants, creating an interest in its diversity, anatomical and physiological characteristics. Bearing in mind that Ecuador has a very small territory (283,560 km2), has about 4500 species grouped in 218 genera, which corresponds to 10% of the species of higher plants, of which 1318 are endemic and 82% of them are threatened. This explosion of biological diversity provides us with a genetic resource that requires the development of activities aimed at the protection and sustainable use.

Objectives:

Collect, catalog, and identify the orchid specimens in areas at risk potential for disruption.
Maintain the collected species in a greenhouse for your study and production of seeds for a germplasm bank.
Define the protocols for cryopreservation, maintenance and in vitro culture of the species collected, in order to establish the procedure for their subsequent reintroduction in protected areas.
