Grugni research activity

Since 2005 she works in the research group coordinated by Prof. Semino, mainly dealing with the characterization of human populations through the analysis of uniparental markers, i.e. the male-specific region of the Y chromosome and the mitochondrial DNA. The work carried out over the years has been focused on the reconstruction of the succession and the influence that the ancient migration events have had on the genetic structure of modern populations. Particular attention was addressed to European and Middle Eastern populations, but also to Native Americans. The obtained results have contributed to the understanding of the role of the Near Eastern region in the human dispersals (Al-Zahery et al. 2011, Grugni et al., in preparation), of the peopling of Europe (Karachanak et al. 2009, 2011) and of the Americas from a male perspective.

In collaboration with the group of Prof. Torroni we have also taken into account the pathological role of mtDNA and, in particular, the correlation between the mtDNA background and the development of specific T2DM (type 2 diabetes mellitus) complications.

In collaboration with the group of Prof. Ferretti it has recently started the search for new biallelic markers on cattle Y-chromosomes that would not only allow to construct their phylogeny, but also to understand when and where domestication of this species occurred and the various races originated. Taking into account that in the last 10,000 years the genetic histories of cattle and humans have often followed parallel roads, the results could also provide useful information about movements of human populations.
