Nielsen research activity

• Isolation and genetic and molecular characterization of mutants of maize and common bean with a low seed content of the antinutritional compound phytic acid, and study of their physiological implications and of their possible use for the improvement of the nutritional qualities of feedstock and food in terms of phosphorous, iron and zinc bioavailability increase.

• Setting up of systems for culturing microalgae in photobioreactors and using them for the bioremediation of urban or zootechnical wastewaters as well as for accumulation of biomass usable for biofuels production or other applications.

• Setting up and biochemical characterization of an innovative system for obtaining fermentable sugars from plant biomasses through physical pretreatments with microwaves or biological pretreatments with fungi able to degrade lignine, and subsequent use of hydrolytic enzymes produced in transgenic or transplanstomic (foreign genes introduced in plastids) plants obtained by the prof. Cella’s group (also belonging to the Department of Genetics and Microbiology).

Materials and methods commonly used: in vitro culture of plant cells; biochemical assays of enzymatic activities and of various bioactive molecules extracted from plants or plant cell cultures; extraction and purification of plant protein through liquid chromathography, FPLC, electrophoresis); extraction and HPLC analysis of small organic plant molecules.
